Imposing Late Georgian building on High Street dating from circa 1810, with later alterations. Late 19th century frontage alterations. Had been closed for some years until bought by J.D. Wetherspoons in 2013 and re-opened in December. Spacious interior retaining its original plain staircase, with an overall relaxing atmosphere and including a real fire (solid fuel burner)-see photograph. Once a coaching inn, a stopping point for "The Royal Sovereign" and "The Rocket" fast coaches in times past. Six guest ales as well as the standard Abbot Ale and Ruddles Best, with local beers getting a good showing.
